Vegetation along the shore of the lower river reflects the saline influence of tidal waters. Remember, the uplands are private property. It may be necessary to push the canoe through shallow areas. A privately-owned dam prevents access during periods of low water. These miles of solitude and undisturbed banks are ideal for canoeing. From the lake the river courses for several miles through a narrow, serpentine channel, bordered by spanish moss-laden branches of live oaks and graceful, arching trunks of sabal palm trees. Lower Myakka Lake lies in the 7,500-acre Wilderness Preserve south of SR 72. Twelve miles of the Wild and Scenic River flow through the park. Sandhill cranes nest along the water’s edge. In the winter, ducks and shorebirds feed in the shallows as bald eagles and ospreys fish from above. You can see alligators and wading birds from the park drive year-round. The park is famous for its diverse wildlife. These lakes and marshes form an elongated basin through which the Myakka River flows. Prominent among the picturesque features here are two lakes and the extensive marshes between them. Snook Haven is one of those places that may have you wondering why you picked it when you arrive and never wanting to leave when it’s time to go.Most of the watershed lies to the north in Manatee County but the Myakka does not become well-defined as a river until its numerous tributaries coalesce near the Sarasota County boundary where the river enters Myakka River State Park. One of the waitresses went table to table soliciting contributions, and patrons were more than happy to contribute. All the bands at Snook Haven play for tips. This heavily wooded site on the river's edge is definitely old Florida and a place you will enjoy visiting. Sit by the bandstand or along the shores of the Myakka River. But this older Sunday afternoon crowd was one of the most lively crowds that we have seen at a Florida beach bar. When your food is ready, the wait staff will find your number and bring your order to the table. Place the number given to you when you ordered on your table. Order your food and drinks, and step outside to find an umbrella covered picnic table. Once you arrive, step up to the service window. There is nothing upscale about this place, but there is no doubt everyone is there to have a good time. This eclectic bar is located on the Myakka River and has some of the friendliest employees of any bar we’ve been to. At the end of the road is Snook Haven, a long time gathering place for locals and visitors to enjoy a bite to eat, have a few drinks (wine and beer only), and listen to some great music. Venice Drive and travel down a road that looks more like a state park than the entrance to a beach bar.
